FAQ: Concussion Baseline Testing and Retesting at Maximum Physiotherapy
What is the SCAT2?
The SCAT2 stands for Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2. It is a standardized method of evaluating injured athletes for concussion and can be used in athletes aged 10 and older.
How does an athlete do a SCAT2 baseline test?
The SCAT2 test is designed to be administered by a medical or health professional. It is a one-on-one test administered in a quiet setting without distractions.
How often should someone get baseline testing?
It is recommended that a baseline test be done every 6 months for children under age 16 as their brains are still developing. For adults, the recommendation is every 1-2 years.
How much does it cost?
The cost for a baseline test or retest is $50. Many extended insurance plans cover physiotherapy assessments.
How long does the testing take?
It takes approximately 30 minutes including a talk with the parents, if the person being tested is a child.
What are some of the features of the test?
The test includes an evaluation of 22 symptoms, a Maddocks Score which is a sideline assessment, a cognitive assessment including orientation, immediate memory and concentration tasks, a balance test, co-ordination examination and delayed recall assessment. Scores are given for each section and an overall score is determined.
Who can administer follow up testing?
It is best if the follow up testing is administered by the same person who did the initial baseline test, however, another health professional can administer the test and compare it to baseline scores.
When should an athlete have baseline testing?
It is best to have a baseline test done before the start of a sport season.
When should someone get a follow up test?
A follow up test should be done within 48 hours if there is a suspicion that a concussion has been sustained.
When can the athlete return to play?
An athlete should not return to play until their follow up test score is back to the level of their baseline score and they are symptom free. The athlete’s family doctor is responsible for medical clearance for return to play.
