What is a Kinesiologist?

Kinesiologists:

  • operate within the areas of sport, recreation, work, exercise and activities of daily living.
  • can help prevent injury by determining whether a person is a high or low risk for injury depending on their posture, muscular endurance, flexibility and work conditions.
  • can enhance performance in athletes. Athletes require the activation of specific muscle groups and certain muscles patterns to excel at their sport. These muscle groups and patterns are uniquely individual to each sport and athlete participating in them.
  • can provide individualized rehabilitation programs crucial to the success of recovery following an injury or surgery.
  • can perform workplace assessments and make recommendations to make work environments safer and decrease the chance of employee injury.
  • can create individual weight loss programs that are safe and sustainable combining healthy eating with an appropriate exercise program to build muscle, lose fat and improve health.
  • can perform a thorough assessment to identify any muscle tightness, weakness, or imbalances and create an exercise program to address issues identified.
  • are certified provincially and federally. The Ontario Kinesiology Association provides certification and liability insurance in the province of Ontario.
  • study a wide variety of subjects at University including ergonomics, exercise prescription, mental health and nutrition.
