What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing, reducing or relieving acute or chronic pain, increasing energy, and improving the function of affected areas of the body. It involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissues at specific points on the body.

With its roots in traditional Chinese medicine, the practice of acupuncture is based on the principle that our health depends on the balanced functioning of the body’s energy flow. Acupuncture sessions aim to normalize the flow of energy and thus resolve symptoms. Western acupuncturists believe that the body’s natural healing abilities are enhanced by acupuncture. This is done by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals.

What Health Conditions Can Acupuncture Treatment Sessions Help With?

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for a wide variety of health conditions, especially for pain relief. Over a period of time, acupuncture can sometimes outperform more conventional treatments. Some of the specific conditions that acupuncture services treat include:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Postoperative pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Muscle spasms
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscular pain
  • Joint pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Neck pain

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The body reacts to the needles as they are recognized as “foreign”. The white blood cells or “fighter cells” infiltrate the area where the needle is inserted. This encourages the inflammation and repair process, giving the healing a kick start!

Most people feel only minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted, and some feel nothing at all. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, sterile and disposable. With almost a complete absence of adverse effects and complications, acupuncture is very safe and effective.

In the past 2,000 years, more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with all other treatment options combined.

Acupuncture is used for a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including but not limited to headaches, arthritis, neck and back pain, TMJ problems, tendonitis, tennis elbow and sciatica.

Benefits of acupuncture include:

  • Decreased pain
  • Improved sleep
  • Higher energy levels
  • Improved blood flow
  • Improved quality of life
