Custom Orthotics

What are Custom Orthotics?
Custom orthotics are corrective devices worn inside the shoe that help to put the foot and ankle in proper alignment – this can assist the muscles, tendons, and bones of your feet and lower legs function optimally.
When appropriately prescribed, custom orthotics can:
- decrease pain, not only in the foot, but in other parts of the body such as the knee, hip and lower back
- provide support and stability to the ankle
- improve overall quality of life
How are custom orthotics made?
While orthotics can be made by several different processes, at Maximum we take a mold of the patient’s foot using impression foam and send it to a laboratory with the physiotherapist’s directions for correction.
At the lab, pedorthists/orthotists work with technicians to pour plaster into the mold, and when it hardens it perfectly reproduces the bottom of the individual’s foot.
Once a reproduction of the individual’s foot is made, the team then use the physiotherapist’s directions to custom-make a device to meet the patient’s specific needs.
