What Is Vestibular Physiotherapy?
Vestibular physiotherapy, also known as vestibular rehabilitation, is a movement-based approach designed to improve balance and decrease dizziness. It works with the vestibular system, which includes:
- The inner ear structures that detect motion and position
- The nerve pathways that send signals to the brain
- The areas of the brain that interpret balance and orientation
When any part of this system is disrupted—by injury, illness, or neurological conditions—you may experience dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness. Vestibular physiotherapy uses specific exercises and gentle repositioning techniques to retrain the brain and body, improving balance and reducing symptoms.
How Does Vestibular Rehabilitation Work?
The approach is safe, effective, and evidence-based. Research has shown that even a single session of vestibular therapy can lead to significant improvement, with studies reporting success rates of up to 78%. Many of our clients notice a difference in just a few visits, and some experience immediate relief after their very first treatment.
Our Approach to Vestibular Physiotherapy
Your journey starts with a comprehensive assessment at our Collingwood clinic. This first session is designed to uncover the root cause of your symptoms and may include:
- Detailed History – We’ll talk through your symptoms, when they began, and what makes them better or worse.
- Neurological Testing – Simple, painless tests of your balance, reflexes, eye movements, and body coordination.
- Assessment and Planning – Once we’ve identified the source of the issue, we’ll create a clear treatment plan tailored to your needs.
This first session also includes treatment, so you won’t have to wait to start working toward relief.
What Conditions Can Vestibular Physiotherapy Address?
Vestibular physiotherapy can help manage a wide variety of balance and dizziness-related concerns, including:
Dizziness and vertigo
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
Balance disorders
Sports-related concussions or injuries
