What Is Vestibular Physiotherapy?

Vestibular physiotherapy, also known as vestibular rehabilitation, is a movement-based approach designed to improve balance and decrease dizziness. It works with the vestibular system, which includes:

  • The inner ear structures that detect motion and position
  • The nerve pathways that send signals to the brain
  • The areas of the brain that interpret balance and orientation

When any part of this system is disrupted—by injury, illness, or neurological conditions—you may experience dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness. Vestibular physiotherapy uses specific exercises and gentle repositioning techniques to retrain the brain and body, improving balance and reducing symptoms.

How Does Vestibular Rehabilitation Work?

During treatment, our physiotherapist uses a series of movements and exercises tailored to your needs. These may include head positioning maneuvers to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) or balance and gaze stabilization exercises to address dizziness from other causes.

The approach is safe, effective, and evidence-based. Research has shown that even a single session of vestibular therapy can lead to significant improvement, with studies reporting success rates of up to 78%. Many of our clients notice a difference in just a few visits, and some experience immediate relief after their very first treatment.

Our Approach to Vestibular Physiotherapy

Your journey starts with a comprehensive assessment at our Collingwood clinic. This first session is designed to uncover the root cause of your symptoms and may include:

  • Detailed History – We’ll talk through your symptoms, when they began, and what makes them better or worse.
  • Neurological Testing – Simple, painless tests of your balance, reflexes, eye movements, and body coordination.
  • Assessment and Planning – Once we’ve identified the source of the issue, we’ll create a clear treatment plan tailored to your needs.

This first session also includes treatment, so you won’t have to wait to start working toward relief.

Vestibular Physiotherapy Collingwood FAQs

How Long Does a Vestibular Physiotherapy Program Usually Last?

The length of a vestibular physiotherapy program depends on the individual, but most people notice improvement within just a few weeks. Many complete their program in 2–6 sessions, while others with more complex conditions may benefit from ongoing care. Progress is influenced by factors such as the cause of dizziness, overall health, and consistency with home exercises.

At Maximum by Body ’n Balance Physio, we regularly reassess your progress to ensure your program evolves with you, adjusting exercises and strategies as you improve so you get the ideal results in the shortest time frame.

What Can I Expect To Feel During and After Treatment?

You may experience mild dizziness or a sense of unsteadiness during certain exercises, especially when retraining your brain to adapt to head movements. This temporary response is actually part of the process and usually decreases with each session.

After treatment, it’s common to feel slightly fatigued or lightheaded for a short time, but many clients also report a noticeable sense of improvement within days. Our team ensures you feel supported throughout, pacing the exercises to your comfort level and monitoring your progress closely to maximize safety and effectiveness.

Is Vestibular Physiotherapy Safe for Older Adults?

Absolutely. Vestibular physiotherapy is widely used with older adults, especially since balance issues and dizziness are common as we age. The therapy is tailored to your comfort level, using safe, supervised movements that are appropriate for your physical ability. By improving balance, posture, and spatial awareness, vestibular rehabilitation can also help reduce the risk of falls, which is particularly important for seniors.

At our Collingwood clinic, we create individualized programs that move at your pace, ensuring that you build stability and confidence gradually while avoiding unnecessary strain or discomfort.
